I’m totally obsessed with turmeric. Like TOTALLY! People call turmeric a SUPER SPICE, with a pretty good reason. Turmeric IS one of the most powerful natural remedies in the world. AND it’s gorgeous, yellow and beautifully aromatic… AND I absolutely love it! Of course in the colder winter months, like now, I use turmeric more often, because of its health benefits.

I enhance almost all my meals with this super healthy spice. I put it in my scrambled eggs in the morning, in soups and stews of course, and even in my smoothies. My husband is joking, telling if I could eat turmeric with a spoon, I probably would. And somewhat and right. Like I said, I’m obsessed!

The reasons why I’m SO obsessed with turmeric lately is because of the cold and flu season that’s started to happen around us. Honestly, I’m not such a fan of antibiotics or any pills as a matter of fact. I believe we can prevent many diseases just by eating right and healthy food, and why not giving natural remedies a chance to protect us. Right?!

I must say we are doing quite well… my family I mean. My kid had some sore throat last week, but after a double dose of vegetable stew with turmeric, chamomile tea with ginger and honey, and of course the-one-and-only-mother love, we were able to repel a troublesome sore throat. We VS flu – 1:0!

So last week I decided to make these Lemon Turmeric Energy Balls because everyone in the house loves it. And we can’t get enough lemon and turmeric in our bodies these days for immune boosting. Energy balls are really great for the quick energy boost, but also they are very nutritious and healthy snack that will satisfy your hunger and cravings for sweets, without unnecessary calories.

To make Lemon Turmeric Energy Balls I used almonds rich in healthy fats and oats that are high in dietary fibers and contain a beta-glucan, substance that activates immune cells in our bodies, thus protecting us from the diseases. Both almonds and oats are also very good source of plant-based proteins, and they both contain essential minerals, like manganese, copper, phosphorus and magnesium.

To sweeten my Lemon Turmeric Energy Balls I used Medjool dates, so these energy balls don’t contain any added or refined sugars. I enriched these energy balls further with chia seeds full of plant-based proteins and dietary fibers.

Last week I bought some organic lemons that aren’t treated with any chemicals. I’ve used some of these lemons for making my famous all time favorite Raspberry Lemon Cake, and the rest I decided to use for making these amazing Lemon Turmeric Energy Balls. The addition of fresh lemon juice and lemon zest enriched these energy balls with the beautiful fresh, citrus aroma. They turned out to be like the little ray of sunshine on a cold winter days.

These Lemon Turmeric Energy Balls are packed with healthy, high-quality dietary fibers, healthy fats, and plant-based proteins. Also, they are vegan, refined sugar-free AND gluten-free. Just perfect!

Lemon Turmeric Energy Balls

  • 12 Medjool dates
  • 1 cup rolled oats gluten free
  • ½ cup almonds
  • 1 tablespoon chia seeds
  • 4 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon lemon zest
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder ground
  • ½ cup shredded coconut for dusting


  1. Remove the pits from dates and soak them in hot water for several minutes. When the dates are softened, drain them and place in food processor. Save the water.
  2. Add the other ingredients to a food processor and blend until mixture turns into a dough-like consistency. Add 1 tablespoon of water in which you have soaked the dates if the mixture is too dry.
  3. With the small spoon scoop the mixture and roll into balls. Roll the balls in shredded coconut and place on the baking sheet.
  4. Store energy balls in an airtight container in the refrigerator until serving.

Recipe Notes

As a measure I used US cup (240ml). Keep the energy balls frozen up to 3 months in the freezer.

  18. I love turmeric, so I am a-okay with the sudden huge turmeric craze, but I will admit to being a little skeptical of all the health benefits. I have no doubt that there are a lot of benefits, but is it really at the quantity we’d get from eating one or two lemon turmeric energy balls? I’m a scientist in the drug discovery pipeline for cancer research working with natural products, so I am well aware of the AMAZING healing (and harmful!) products from spices and plants, but most of what we work with require a significant dose. Taking daily capsules full of turmeric – sure! But a little ingested here or there? I’d love to hear more about this if you have some good research. 🙂

    • I’m sure that taking a full dose may affects your body immediately, BUT I’m more for eating balanced, healthy meals every day and consuming various healing spices daily/weekly in small quantities complementing those meals. I think nutrients accumulate in our bodies and give benefits no matter how low dose actually is. Sure two bites of those turmeric balls won’t heal you BUT it will give you some benefits. But I’m no scientist or anything. That’s only my point of view 🙂

  21. These sound really healthy. But I was surprised to not find any fat listed in the ingredients, because Turmeric is only fat soluble. Perhaps the chia seeds contain enough fat to help the turmeric absorb. I wonder if the addition of coconut oil would change their consistency too much.     • Thank you Jori. I’m glad you like the recipe 🙂 I used almonds and chia seeds in this recipe. Almonds same as chia seeds are very good source of healthy fats. Adding coconut oil in mixture wouldn’t change consistency too much but I think it’s not really a necessary.

  23. Ri recently read that turmeric tea, either made with ground turmeric or in a ready bought tea bags, was a pain relief for arthritis. As I suffer with this ailment, particularly in my hands, I approached this idea with some scepticism. I made the first 2 or 3 batches using the ground spice I already had. I then went away foa couple of weeks and bought some tea bags. It really does make a difference to the pain I suffer in the hands. It does not take the swelling away but I know when I have not had my regular dose of tuneric tea. These little lemon & tuneric bites will be on my plan for tomorrow’s baking. Thank you.

  28. These were amazing! im so glad i came across your recipe on pintrest. I only got 18 balls instead of 24, but maybe i rolled mine bigger then your yours (mine are like the size of a ‘shooter’ marble). Also i had to add 1-2TB of oat flour as the mix was very moist, but i substituted golden raisins for the dates so maybe thats why my mix was soft. I added an extra 1/2 teaspoon of turmeric caz i love it and try to eat as much as i can every day, and it did not overpower the lemon at all. I will certainly be making these again!

    • Hi, Anna. You can sub dates with any dried fruits – dried apricots, raisins, cranberries, or even figs. I would go with dried apricots in this one. But don’t quite know what amount you need to use here since I didn’t try with any other fruit than dates. I guess it would be 1:1 ratio, with maybe more addition of water (apricots are rather dry). Let me know how they turned out 😉

  34. We don’t have gluten free oats in Australia (due to food regulatory laws) – can you suggest an alternative?

    • Hi Cara 🙂 Well from what I have heard you can substitute oats with quinoa flakes. I never try quinoa flakes in this recipe, but I guess you can try it. You may need to adjust the ingredients slightly. If mixture is to dry try adding a teaspoon of water, or if its to moist, add more flakes to dry the mixture. Let me know how it turns out 😉

    I’ve been taking a turmeric vitamin daily for 12 months now. I have not been sick at all. I also take a ginger vitamin. A Korean friend suggested especially in Winter. I am looking forward to making these but I was wondering if you have any idea for a coconut substitute ? I can’t do the coconut. It’s a texture issue for me. I love coconut milk, oil and even use flour for baking but cannot seem to handle the flakes. Thanks for your thoughts.

    • Hi Laura. I’m sooo glad to hear turmeric and ginger is so helpful to you. We love it too. This winter we didn’t get sick at all! Coconut flakes are more for dusting rather than for flavor purpose in this recipe. So you can easily do these balls without coconut flakes. But if you want some dusting over these balls, you can sub coconut flakes with almond meal. Enjoy!

    • Hi Bethany! No unfortunately I haven’t tried substituting oats with any other ingredients in this recipe. But guess you can try adding more almonds and use protein powder. If mixture is too dry just add a bit more water.

    • Hmmm you could try sub almonds with seeds – like sunflower or pumpkin seeds. But I’m not quite sure about quantities you need to use nor the final taste (since I never try substituting almonds with seeds in this recipe). I guess sunflower seeds would be best options since they are mild in taste. Try it out and let me know 🙂

    Forgot the chia and substituted oats for half cup almond meal half coconut, added 2 tsp melted coconut oil, substituted almonds for cashews. Added coconut at end to dry it out. Oh and a sprinkle of black pepper to help tumeric absorption.

      • You need to eat turmeric with black pepper or the health benefits of turmeric won’t be absorbed.

        • Turmeric will be absorbed with or without pepper as long as you consume it with some oil/fat. Black pepper only increases the amount of the curcumin (active substance in turmeric) that will be absorbed in your body. So it’s not necessary to eat turmeric with black pepper. 🙂

    I love this recipe. The only addition I made was a scoop of hemp powder to dry them out and add a little more protein. I also rolled them in unsweetened carob powder and hemp seeds with a dash of cinnamon. My son actually ate one and didn’t say yuck! He hates anything healthy with nuts. So success!!

    • Hi Paula. Maybe you can try substitute almonds with pepitas (green pumpkin seeds) or sunflower seeds. But since I haven’t tried that substitute in this particular recipe, you will have to experiment with ratios. Let me know how that turned out. 🙂

  58. These Lemon turmeric energy balls are the best. I used quick oats (porridge) instead of rolled oats and stuck to the rest of the recipe. I was unsure about how it would taste with turmeric but they turned out perfect. 10/10!

  59. I made these this morning and I am amazed at how good they are! I didn’t have coconut flakes (I’m not generally a coconut fan) but I used coconut flour instead and they are so good! I one-and-a-halved the recipe but didn’t have quite enough lemon juice so I used a little lime juice. To me they taste just like lemon bars! I will be making these regularly!

    Hi .. how long do these stay good for in a air tight container? Do they need to be kept in the fridge?

    • Preferably in cold place, not necessary a fridge. They will last up to one week (7-10 days). You can freeze them, up to three months in freezer.

I also like that dates are used, because it gives it the right amount of sweetness, not overly sweet, like honey or maple syrup would make them. The first time I made them, I didn’t realize that I did not have vanilla, so I used half the amount of almond extract. They were still delicious, but now I use vanilla extract.     • You can definitely sub dates for raisins – golden or regular either is ok. Since I’ve never tried making this recipe with raisins I can’t tell you exactly how much would be needed. What dates do, they bond the mixture, making it sticky. So, maybe you can start with a handful of raisins, and then add more if needed. Hope this help.

  67. To benefit most from turmeric is has to be combined with an oil (like a tablespoon of coconut oil in this recipe) en some ground black pepper. I guess that could easily be incorporated in the recipe. Plan to make them for sure!
