Delicious and rich in flavor, infused with herbs, this easy homemade tomato sauce is made from fresh tomatoes in just 15 minutes. Use it as tomato base on a pizza, as a pasta sauce, or serve alongside meat. It's quick, fresh, fragrant and sweet, but without added sugars.
Friday night it's pizza night at our house. Boys love my healthy homemade pizza so much that if there's no pizza on Friday night, their world will literally fall apart. Sometimes it happens that we eat late lunch or stay out a bit late on Friday. Regardless of these exceptional circumstances, pizza must be served on Friday night. Even if that means me making pizza at 11 PM :D
For making my boys favorite healthy pizza, I always use a homemade tomato sauce made from fresh tomatoes, whose recipe I share with you today. If you're using canned or other unhealthy, full of added sugars and additives tomato sauce for making your homemade pizza, just stop. With this recipe, I'm going to show you how easy is to make your own homemade sauce that tastes so much better than any purchased or canned tomato sauce. Do I have to mention it's much healthier than store bought sauces!? This easy homemade tomato sauce has NO added sugars, and it doesn't contain any additives or preservatives. It's made with fresh ingredients, full of sweet tomato flavor and just delicious. Another advantage of making homemade sauces is that you can add seasonings according to your taste. That way you kinda personalize every dish you make ;)
To make this sauce, I used fresh Big Beef tomatoes. They are the extra meaty type of tomatoes, juicy and highly flavored, and most important now in season. Before cooking them, I remove tomato skin by boiling tomatoes in hot water for several minutes. Sometimes when I'm in a hurry, I just roughly peel tomato skin with a knife ;) I like chunky tomato sauce, so before cooking, I chop the tomatoes in smaller peaces, put in a saucepan and use the fork for stirring and break down tomatoes chunks naturally. If you prefer pureed sauce, chop the tomatoes in a food processor or blender before cooking them. A few pulses will make a chunky sauce, and longer processing will make a very smooth sauce.
To spice up my tomato sauce, I used very classic Italian spice mix - oregano, rosemary, and basil. I also added fresh parsley and a pinch of salt in the sauce. When I pick tomatoes for making this sauce, I always choose very ripe or even overripe tomatoes. The softer, the better. Very ripe tomatoes are full of sweet tomato flavor which makes the sauce just deliciously sweet, so there's no need to add extra sugar. But it's all up to you. If you like sweeter tasting tomato sauce, just add a bit off agave syrup. He's sweet but neutral taste won't affect the overall flavor of tomato sauce.
As I mentioned, It usually takes around 15 minutes for tomatoes to soften and sauce to starts thicken. Shorter cooking times will yield a thinner sauce with a fresher tomato flavor while longer cooking times will thicken your sauce and give it a more cooked flavor. Once cooked, transfer the sauce into a clean glass jar and keep refrigerated for up to one week. Use this easy homemade tomato sauce as a base for pizza, or as a pasta sauce. You can also serve it alongside meat. One such recipe that I'll share with you next time ;) Till then, grab yourself some tomatoes and make this easy homemade tomato sauce :)
